Is a Dirty HVAC Air Filter Really a Big Deal?

You may think that we tell you to change your air filter because a dirty one contaminates the air in your home, but this isn’t totally correct. Sure, an air filter can help with indoor air quality, but that is not why it’s in your HVAC system to begin with.

Rather than preventing allergens from moving back into your air stream, it’s designed to block particles from damaging the inside of your HVAC system by pummeling the components within with dirt, dust, and other debris. When your air filter becomes too dirty and clogged up, it can do just as much damage to your HVAC system, whether we’re talking about an air conditioner or a furnace or heat pump.

Let’s face it, we’ll probably get there someday, but, today is not that day. It’s up to the homeowner to detect when something is out of the ordinary when it comes to the day-to-day operations of their West Palm Beach, FL HVAC system. Signs of an air conditioner in disrepair may include a drop in cooling power, a spike in energy bills, or repeatedly tripping circuit breakers. But that’s not all.
