3 of the Worst Indoor Air Quality Problems

The new year is upon us, and it’s time to take a deep breath, reflect upon our lives, and also improve our homes. When it comes to advancing the comfort and convenience of your home, few factors are as important as the quality of the air that you and your loved ones breathe. Considering our climate here in Wellington, it’s absolutely critical that you keep a close watch over your indoor air quality. When your windows and doors are shut tightly against the elements in order to stay comfortable and conserve energy, contaminants and pollutants tend to linger a bit longer than they should.

  1. Excessive dust and dander. While some are more sensitive to dust than others, few would argue that inhaling dust in large quantities is good for your health and well-being. The same goes for the dead skin cells and other matter that constitute dander (and let’s not forget about pet dander, either), which can lead to sneezing, coughing, and general irritation to your sinuses and mucous membranes.
  2. Mold and mildew. If you live in our area long enough, you’re going to see mold and mildew. There’s little that you can do to prevent fungal growth in the home, given the right conditions, so it’s important that you change the conditions under which mold and mildew thrive. One of the best ways to keep your ducts regularly cleaned, including the use of anti-microbial agents. But you can also improve your chances with a professionally installed UV germicidal light. These units are installed directly within your ductwork so that all of your air is purified as it passes through.
  3. Bacteria and other viruses. Without the natural ventilation of a strong breeze, bacteria and viruses will tend to accumulate within the home. Targeting these biological contaminants should be a top priority if you suspect that your indoor air quality is suffering. Keeping your HVAC system (including ducts) cleaned regularly, and investing in whole-house air purification is a great way to start.
