For example, many older furnaces have an annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) rating of about 60%. This rating measures how much of the fuel consumed by the furnace is actually turned into heat. With a 60% AFUE it means that the furnace is wasting 40% of the fuel that it burns. Newer furnaces can have an AFUE rating of 95% or higher.
