Signs You May Have a Problem with Your Ductwork

Of all the appliance and electronic components you have in your home, you probably do not give much thought to your ductwork. However, your ducts are an essential part of your household air conditioning system. They function to transport conditioned air to the various rooms in your home. Because they don’t have moving parts, they rarely require repairs the way the rest of your HVAC system does.

However, that does not mean they are immune to problems. Repairs or replacement is sometimes an unavoidable necessity. And fixing it yourself is not a viable option. Despite its name, “duct tape” is not a sustainable solution for ductwork damage. The good news is, a qualified professional can conduct repairs and have you back in business in no time. But how do you know if you even have a problem with your ductwork? We’ve shared some signs below.

Your Utility Bills Are Higher

Have you found that you’re suddenly paying more in energy costs than your neighbors are, despite your comparable HVAC use? This could be cause by a breach or a clog in your ductwork, which requires your HVAC system to work harder that it normally would or should.

Odd Noises

When you experience a duct breach, the air from your HVAC system has to fit through a tighter space, causing odd noises such as whines or groans. Or, your air may be escaping through a gap or hole in your ducts, creating a type of hissing noise.

Diminished Air Quality

You may notice that your airflow has decreased, or that there are cold and hot spots in your home in areas that either aren’t getting enough conditioned air or are getting too much. Another symptom of a duct problem is a musty smell and/or an increasing presence of dust.
