Now Is the Time to Take Care of AC Repairs

technician working on outside unit of an air conditionerGiven that our version of a “cool spring day” in the Boca Raton area is a day when the lowest temperature is 80°, it goes without saying that our air conditioners get quite the workout. If you aren’t already using your AC system, you will be very soon, and hopefully, you’ve already scheduled your AC maintenance appointment.

During this appointment, our technicians thoroughly clean and inspect your entire air conditioner, make any minor adjustments that may be needed, and alert you to any Boca Raton, FL air conditioning repair needs that exist. That latter point deserves the most attention on your part. Just because a repair need is “minor” or doesn’t seem to be impacting the air conditioner right now, doesn’t mean it can wait.

Possible AC Repair Needs

Delaying repairs can leave you with higher cooling bills, bigger and costlier emergency repairs later on this spring or summer, or even a completely broken down system years before its time. The following are just a few repair needs our team may alert you to during maintenance, all of which should be addressed ASAP.

Short Cycling

This is one of the biggest issues that an AC system can face. Fortunately, however, it’s actually one of the easiest to spot. Short cycling describes what is happening when your cooling system rapidly cycles on and off every few minutes. This causes a decline in the system output, and causes the various components to wear down much faster than they would otherwise.

If your AC system is allowed to short cycle for too long, it will be much more susceptible to various breakdowns as parts of it begin to fail under the strain. You’ll also likely need to replace your system much sooner than you otherwise would.

Refrigerant Leak

There is a fairly common misconception among homeowners that refrigerant is something that depletes, like gasoline. However, upon installation, your air conditioning system is actually supplied with enough refrigerant to ideally last its entire lifecycle. So if you are losing refrigerant, it means that you have a leak.

An amateur HVAC professional may have told you at some point that refrigerant can and should be refilled—recharged—every year during your maintenance appointment. If you have a leak though, it will affect the performance of your system: the refrigerant must be recharged, yes, but the source of the leak must be found and fixed if you have any hope of using your air conditioner as efficiently as you should be able to.

Air Handler Problems

The air handler of your AC system circulates air throughout your home. Moving that much air puts a significant amount of strain on the motor, so the system uses oiled bearings to compensate. Over time, however, these bearings wear down, and this increases friction on the air handler motor.

You’ll typically hear a grinding down if you have this problem, and know that your air conditioner needs to be looked at. But this is definitely one of those repairs that should not be delayed!
