“Repair It” or “Replace It” is a common argument we go through with ourselves about various conveniences in our lives—our cars, our electronic equipment, and of course our air conditioning systems. Many times—and most ideally so—repairing your air conditioner is sufficient.
Modern air conditioning systems are designed to be very sturdy and last for more than a decade with routine preventive maintenance. The majority of malfunctions that you may run into are those that a skilled HVAC technician from our team can fix quickly. However, there will come a time when your AC system simply can’t handle any more, and it will become more cost-effective to replace the system all together. We’ve listed some signs that it may be time below.
Age
Your air conditioner’s age is an excellent indication of whether it should be repaired or replaced. Most cooling systems have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years, and your AC unit will have its estimated service life on the cabinet. If your system has gone beyond that estimate and has been giving you more and more issues over the years, a replacement may be best.
Increased Utility Bills
It’s only natural that your summer utility bills will be higher than those of spring or fall. However if you’ve noticed that your bills are rising year-to-year despite comparable use and no rise in the price of electricity, then chances are your system isn’t working as efficiently as it once was and needs to be replaced.
Noisy Operation
Have you noticed that your air conditioner is making clanging, banging, or other discerning sounds while it is operating? While this may be a sign it needs repairs (and should be checked if so) it could also be the result of too much cumulative stress over the years, and thus a sign it’s time to replace the system.
