3 Indications Your AC Needs Service

ac-needs-service-3-indicationsSummer is officially here! Although, we probably didn’t have to tell you that—for us, summer is here pretty much all year round. This also means that our air conditioners work a lot harder than they do in other parts of the country. As such, they’re much more likely to run into operational trouble, particularly if they haven’t been regularly maintained.

Maintenance is the number one way to fend off the worst of your air conditioning repairs in West Palm Beach, FL. It’s during this appointment that our professional technicians fully inspect your cooling system for any problems, plus we clean and adjust any components that need it—these steps help your air conditioner run more efficiently, lower your cooling bills, and so long as you stay on top of any recommended repairs, fend off emergencies.

Of course, it’s true that even the most maintained cooling system could still run into a problem and require service, so it’s important to know the signs that this is the case. We’ve shared 3 below!

1. It’s Blowing Warm Air

This is, naturally, a very frustrating problem to have—in fact, aside from a total breakdown, it’s one of the biggest AC emergencies you can face. Just like any other operational problem, there are a few different possible causes for this. It could be as simple as a thermostat that is improperly set, or that is accidentally left in “fan only” mode. Check for this, first.

In the absence of a thermostat problem, you might have a tripped circuit breaker on the outside unit, leaving your inside unit to distribute warm air through the home. The third, and significantly more serious, possible cause is that you have a refrigerant leak. This can be detrimental to your air conditioner and needs to be repaired right away.

2. It Costs More Than It Used to Just to Operate

It goes without saying, but the hotter it climbs outside, the more you’re going to run your AC. During this time, your cooling bills are going to rise. You can expect to see some fluctuations in your monthly bills over the summer.

However, if you’re noticing that it costs you more than it did last year for the same amount of air conditioner use—or more than your neighbors are paying for comparable use—then it may be that your cooling system isn’t performing as effectively and efficiently as it once did. Repairs might be necessary, or if you have an aging air conditioner (10-15 years) it could even be time to consider a system upgrade.

3. It is Making Unfamiliar or Concerning Noises

As a homeowner, you are going to be familiar with the noises that different appliances and pieces of equipment make in and around your home. No air conditioner is going to be completely silent, of course, but if you notice that your cooling system is making strange new noises like hissing, clanging, or screeching, then a damaged AC component or a refrigerant leak could be the source.

Another factor to consider is that the noise might not be coming from the actual air conditioning unit at all, but rather your ductwork. Your air ducts are going to produce a little bit of noise when your HVAC system cycles on—this is because they flex due to the fluctuating temperatures within. However, if you hear a hissing, a banging or rattling coming from this part of your system, then chances are you’re due for ductwork repair or replacement.
